What happens at Sparkle?

Local older residents can spend the day and dip into intergenerational sessions with nursery children (from the on-site nursery) and school-age children from Brandlehow primary school.

At Sparkle everyone is valuable because everyone has something to give, as well as receive. For our older members that could mean giving their time to read with a child, teaching a child about their culture or sharing their knowledge of how to do something. For our little ones this could mean sharing a song, playing a game, giving a smile to someone who might be feeling sad or sharing all that energy they have!

We run different activities every week such as reading, singing, craft, gardening, games or exercise. We also regularly have guest speakers or performers. Never a dull day at Sparkle! We serve a free nutritious warm lunch (for adults only) and there is a cosy child-free lounge for those that might not want to mix with the children.

Why intergenerational?

Intergenerational work is a ‘win-win’ for everyone. There are benefits for the older people, such as tackling loneliness and isolation to improving health and wellbeing, and big benefits for younger people too in terms of building confidence and empathy, developing communication skills and even reducing ageism. In times gone by, intergenerational relationships would have been common-place but in today’s society the generations are increasingly segregated. Sparkle aims to bridge that divide and create a community where intergenerational relationships can flourish.

Where is Sparkle?

Our sessions take place within St Stephen’s Church Hall, Manfred Road, SW15 2RS The venue is 2 minutes walk from the 337 and 37 bus stop which is on the Upper Richmond Road.
