St Michael's Church Building Project
Building the Ministry
(Regular bulletins will appear on the left hand column for updates on our progress....)
Over the past few years St Michael’s has seen tremendous growth at both its morning service
and at the evening service, run jointly with its sister church St Stephen’s, Wandsworth.
While such growth is very exciting, it also brings its own challenges. One of these is the physical restrictions of what is an old building now being used in a wide variety of new ways.
In the morning, where many of those coming are families with young children, several of the Sunday school groups have around 40 children, and each age group is crammed into a fairly small room. Enlarged Sunday School space is therefore a priority. In the evening, total numbers attending are frequently around 300, which pretty much fills all the currently available space and leaves no room for further expansion. The flexibility for extra seating for the congregation is therefore also a need, as are additional toilet facilities.
Many of those coming in the evening are young professionals who share houses and are thus unable to host homegroups in their own homes, so they have a need for access to smaller rooms for evening meetings. We also hope to be able to host other meetings, and for this it would be beneficial to be able to close off the worship and office areas securely, while allowing access to the new public rooms.
The huge number of events and activities that our churches are involved with means we now
have an office staff of 7 and it is hoped to improve the office space and also make a main
reception area as part of the new project.
What is proposed therefore is the construction of a new reception area/ main entrance hall
along the north side of the church, allowing us to rearrange the current front area as an improved kitchen, extra toilets and redesigned Sunday School rooms. There will also be a new mezzanine level, which will allow for extra seating when required as well as further meeting rooms.
